Following first-round exits at the 2008 Notre Dame National Debating Championships, word was on the street that ESSDC had boarded the train to ignominy. Certainly a refresher then, that two out of five teams from ESS should reach the semifinals of the Prothom Alo-St. Josephs' Annual Debating Festival 2008, held at St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School, Dhaka from 5-13 September.
ESS1 (rank 3): Faria Ahmed, Tanjim Efaz, Afrida Mahbub
Tanjim Efaz was substituted by Adiba Raisa in the Octofinals and Quarterfinals
Lost to - Josephite Debating Club 1 (St. Joseph's)
ESS2 (rank 4): Risalat Khan, Alaka Halder, Abrar Faiaz
Lost to - Manarat 1 (Manarat Dhaka Intl. College)
The final was held on 13 September between Manarat 1 and Josephite Debating Club 1, with Manarat emerging as champions. In the debate that ensued (This House Believes that the Glass is Half-Full), the teams discussed Bangladesh's development in the 37 years following its independence and whether the spirit behind the Liberation War had all but gone in vain.
